Igenity:
How to use DNA test results

Igenity profiles
Igenity profiles are rich with predictive information. See your data online. Compare your cattle to others in our database. Rank cattle based on alternative scenarios. Can you select more for calving ease while maintaining a baseline standard for ADG? Does emphasizing tenderness change how you retain females and assemble feeders? Imagine what you can do with that insight.

Igenity results report
An Igenity report is your glimpse into the future. You can receive this report via mail, email or fax. You can also look at the results online at Igenity.com. The report uses DNA results to profile animals on a simple 1 to 10 scale for each trait covered by that test. This gives you the ability to go in and pinpoint genetic issues you wish to address, either through heifer selection, purchase of sires or A.I. service.

Igenity production index
Your result report also ranks your cattle with an Igenity Production Index score. This 1-10 scale is based on traits that are critical to any cow/calf producer. It emphasizes maternal fertility, as this is a key driver of cow/calf profit potential. The scale ranks your heifers from top to bottom, so you can easily pick the keepers and sell the rest with your feeder calves.

Igenity custom indexing
You can go online and create your own selection index. This allows you to customize the way you want to sort cattle for your ranch environment, production system or marketing goals.

Igenity benchmarking
You can also use online tools at Igenity.com to benchmark your cattle with other records in our database, which contains hundreds of thousands of records. You can compare your cattle to others within your herd, over time, across your breed, or regionally.

Raise more cows that have more calves
By using Igenity profiles to select for maternal traits that affect fertility and breed back, you can optimize production per cow. Adding in sires that rate highly in their breed for fertility traits can accelerate your progress. Improved maternal traits help solve several issues, such as:

Improve feed efficiency
Cows and calves that are more efficient converting feed enhance the bottom line. For example, selecting females with lower RFI and higher ADG can improve efficiency of gain in your herd. Heifers will reach maturity on less feed. And the calves will have better feed to gain. You can use this potential to guide how you sort, manage, sell, ship or retain pens of feeders that are pre-sorted into calf groups with similar potential, for more uniform time to finish and other efficiencies

Carcass value
Why not know and manage carcass merit long before you sell your cattle? You can select heifers that will transmit higher-quality carcasses to their progeny.  You can pre-sort high-quality cattle and lower-potential cattle to feed, manage and market each group appropriately. Predicting carcass potential is important whether you are selling weaned feeder calves or retaining calves to finish.

Solving a specific problem
Some producers wish to address a key issue in their cow herd. An example may be a goal to improve conception rates in two-year-old heifers. Retaining weaned heifers with the best Igenity heifer-pregnancy scores – plus buying calving-ease bulls with heifer-pregnancy EPDs in the top 30% of their breed – would save years of guesswork.

Making general progress
A selection index allows you to put selection pressure on multiple traits at the same time. An Igenity Production Index is based on standard, industry-accepted values. The basis of these indexes is transparently listed on your report. The reports emphasize maternal traits, due to their critical importance in cow/calf production, while balancing them with feed-efficiency and carcass traits. You can build your own index online, if you wish, and use that to move your herd ahead. Our territory managers are available to help you set up an index for your operation.
